Wednesday 18 October

Really enjoyed the two serial days at school this week but realised the enormity of it when I led a group of year 5 children in some maths work. There was only about eight but I seemed to need to be in 16 places at once. How do teachers cope with 30? Some of the children did well but one boy did nothing all the time he was there. I explained things several times, told him to talk to his partner, who did understand, I encouraged him, but most of the time he stared into space. He has a reading age of 15 + but that is it as far as school goes for him - if it is not reading he goes off into hs little world. After the lesson the teacher gave me a couple of tips but she also got the TA to sit with him for 5 - 10 minutes to get him to do something.
After my last blog I was looking at some websites which are run by schools as a resoucre for other schools, it was recommended to me by the class teacher and i found attached to one - guess what- a blog. This one is run by the teachers though as a continuation of the resource element of the school. They even used this very site to post their blogs. I believe there was something on a radio 4 programme about blogs in school I am hoping to listen again to it sometime.

Monday 16 October

Spent my first serial day in school today which I really enjoyed.I discussed the idea of blogging with a couple of teachers and they are not sure blogging is something that is going to take off in primary schools just yet, due to all the restrictions involved in it.
We have been asked whether this is a medium that can affect ones ability to express oneself, I can only speak from my point of view but I find it difficult to think of anything interesting to say. I also do not liketheideaa that someone unknown to me couldbe reading my musings so Iam not going to put anything personal on here. There will be others who find this a great idea of course. As to whether this is going to encourage children to write, it is going to do nothing for their handwriting, for their ability to keep theirwork neat and presentable, and having spellcheck or something similar is just going to make them lazy with their spellings. If texting is anything to go by they will be typing shortened words which is not very helpful in many jobs where paper work features highly.

Sunday 15th October

I am in the library at University today to catch up on some reading and to download some of the files from blackboard. Because I do not have broadband it takes forever, it has taken minutes today. I have finally ordered broadband but it is not due for a couple of weeks.

Saturday 14th October

Another day another post. Spent the day familiarising myself with the laptop, actually just playing spider solitaire. It seems great Sam has certainly been enjoying the fact that he can sprawl on the sofa, watch T>V and play solitaire. I am not sure if the computer is ever going to be used for its original purpose or just to play games.

Friday 13th October (woooooooooo)

Hello, today has been busy for me but it has not involved college work at all. I have been catching up with all the mundane chores of housework which I have only been doing superficially for the past few weeks.

Thursday 12th October

Today I have taken the plunge and bought a laptop. I spent some time seeking advice and surfing the net and finally purchased one. I think they are almost a necessity for some one at college and although I shall have some use for it, it was with my son in mind, when he goes to college next year, as I hope he will. Just need to get broadband and wireless connection now and I shall feel I have really entered the 21st century.

Wednesday 11th October

Well another busy day at Uni, Teaching and Learning was all about planning and that issomething that scares me a little. It was quite reassuring to know that we have long term and medium term plans to follow and bits from the national curriculum, but I am wondering how it is all going to come together. Alex assures me that it will eventually! Have managed to add another post tonight I had problems yesterday, I am not connected to broadband so everything takes forever. I am going to try to add some photos from my phone so hope this works.
